Originally from Pakistan, Muhammad Haris was attracted by experimental physics and the quality of the scientific supervision of the University of Caen. As part of an international master’s degree in Nuclear Physics, he joined the University and chose to do his research-oriented internships within two excellence laboratories. He takes a look back at this most enriching academic and human environment.
A master’s combining theory and practice, at the core of research
The master’s Muhammad chose is designed on a mix between theoretical courses and research-oriented internships. “This master’s is unique, because it combines two sides of physics: strong theoretical education and significant experimental work. The first semester includes advanced courses as well as a short internship in a laboratory; the second semester focuses on a research-oriented internship.”
During his first internship, Muhammad joined the GANIL, the Large Heavy Ion National Accelerator located on the Campus 2 in Caen. This world-famous nuclear physics centre offered Muhammad “a complete immersion in research. I developed essential practical skills.”
His second internship takes place at the Corpuscular Physics Laboratory (LPC), and focuses more precisely on nuclear physics and nuclear medicine. “With the LPC, I enhance my knowledge in an excellent scientific environment.”
A welcoming and enriching environment
The University of Caen is not just an environment where scientific rigor and innovation go hand-in-hand – actually, the quality of the welcome and of the support really impressed Muhammad. “As soon as I was selected, the International Department of the University reached out: they supported me with the administrative papers, shared precise information about the procedures… The welcome is really great!”
For him, the city of Caen is a real asset for international students: “Caen is a dynamic and multicultural city. I met people from all over the world, which helped me broaden my horizon and see things from various points of view. By living in Caen, not only have I improved on the academic level, but also on the social and personal levels!”
Advice for future international students
Backed by his experience, Muhammad strongly advises other international students to choose the University of Caen Normandy. “This master’s and this city offer a unique mix of academic excellence, state-of-the-art research opportunities and quality of life. If you’re interested in nuclear physics or wish to benefit from an enriching human and professional experience, I strongly recommend this master’s!”
Regarding his own academic career, Muhammad adds: “Choosing to stay here for my second internship is one of the best decisions I’ve taken. Thanks to this choice, I’ve improved my skills in a motivating environment. I hope more students will have the opportunity to live the same experience!”
