Study abroad: why not you?

  • Post last modified:23/07/2025

Thanks to the wide network of international partnerships of the University of Caen Normandy in more than 50 countries around the world, students of all disciplines can go abroad for study and/or internship mobility programmes at different stages of their academic journey.

“Studying in Australia was a dream come true. Thanks to this unforgettable and enriching experience, I went out of my comfort zone and met amazing people from all over the world!”

Julie – Master in International Management, IAE Caen School of ManagementInteruniversity mobility in Australia (2023-2024)

Next year, this could be you!

Who can go and When?

Students from all disciplines can apply to a study mobility programme, from the second year of the Bachelor’s degree to the second year of the Master’s (there can be a few exceptions depending on the curriculum). The application is processed the year before the mobility departure.

Apart from the academic requirements, candidates must certified they have the language level required by the host university.

Where can you go?

Each year, UNICAEN students can benefit from more than 850 exchange opportunities!

  • With the ERASMUS+ programme: more than 200 partner universities across Europe, depending on the agreements signed by each component.
  • With the inter-university programme: more than 400 destinations worldwide, the 77 interU partners of UNICAEN, the ISEP Study Abroad network (320 universities, including 140 in the United States), the Office for Interuniversity Cooperation programme in Quebec, and Asia Exchange.

What are the assets of an academic mobility?

  • Academic recognition. You remain enrolled in your course at Caen, and the studies you complete abroad are recognised as part of your UNICAEN degree. Thus, you do not add an additional semester or year to your French course. However, you do not graduate from the host university.
  • No additional tuition fees. Our partners apply a tuition fee exemption, you only pay the tuition fees for enrolment at the University of Caen Normandy. However, please note that, depending on the programme selected, specific fees may apply.
  • Financial support. Depending on the programme you choose and your personal situation, three different financial supports are available and can be combined. This, includes the Crous scholarship, which you will continue to receive during your mobility

Academic mobility: 5 steps to prepare your project

In most cases, courses attended in the host country will be delivered in a foreign language. As such, you should start learning the language of the country you’re interested in as early as possible, from the start of your studies at the University.

The Carré International offers additional training in 15 foreign languages through evening classes or intensive courses during school holidays. Depending on your field of study, these courses may be eligible for the second language requirement (LV2).

Whatever your field of study and your project, UNICAEN’s extensive network of international partners offers a wide range of destinations.

While the choice is mainly based on course prerequisites, other criteria come into play and influence the decision of a programme or a country: linguistic preference, geographic interest, proximity, cost of living, travel expenses…

That’s why you should take your time and consider all the aspects before you make your final decision.

Contrary to popular belief, academic mobility does not equal to financial obstacles. Depending on the programme chosen and your personal situation, various financial supports are available and can be combined, ensuring that the academic mobility does not cost more than a year or a semester of studies in Caen.

Once your linguistic training is finished, you must provide certification of your language level to ensure it meets the linguistic requirements of our partner universities.

Depending on your destination and/or chosen programme, you can either benefit from free online English language test sessions (ELAO tests) organised by the Carré International or register for a paid English certification such as TOEFL or IELTS.

The last step, but certainly not least, is the application. You have to apply the year before your departure, via the UNICAEN’s online platform MoveOn. Once your file is complete, it is submitted to the teachers of your faculty, who will provide the final decision.
Once your mobility project is validated by UNICAEN, you will still have many procedures to complete, notably with the university that will host you for your semester or year of studies.
At each step, the team of the International Mobility Programmes Unit (PPMI) at the Carré International will be available to listen to you, guide you, and advise you.
