UNICAEN, laureate of the « Choose France » certification

Mrs Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, announced on July 8, 2019, the list of the first 25 French higher education institutions to receive the CHOOSE FRANCE label, including the University of Caen Normandy, one of the 13 universities.

This first step in recognizing the work undertaken by UNICAEN on international attractiveness and the quality of its support for international students was fully formalized on October 22, 2019, with the announcement of the level of certification, 2 stars out of the 3 possible, granted for a period of 4 years (2019-2023).

Based on this qualitative observation, reflecting the strategic commitment included in the axis 1 of its 2017-2021 institutional development plan, UNICAEN is now entering a phase of sustainability and improvement of the various procedures evaluated during the label process. It will for instance involve deploying the three areas of improvement for which we received development funds.

Area #1 - Fostering international students integration through a buddy system
A call for project was sent early December 2019 to students' associations to carry a buddy system test-program in January 2020. This test-program should lead to a full buddy system widely offered  starting homecoming week 2020/21 to all new incoming international students, on all UNICAEN campuses and sites, and under  the aegis of the Erasmus Student Network  (ESN). Various welcome and integration actions should be implemented by the students associations selected thorough the call for project.

Area #2 - Improving the academic integration of international students through French language support.
This is particularly meant to respond to axis 3.2 of the UNICAEN development plan, covering the social responsibility of the university. UNICAEN was granted national accreditation for a bridge-diploma intended for students in exile, a program fully compatible with this area of improvement. The first group of students started their training in September 2019.

Area #3 - Professionalizing international students support at UNICAEN through staff training  in foreign languages and cross-cultural skills.
In addition to the systematization of training in foreign languages on professional objectives, which currently benefit each week to more than 35 staff, the Carré international will organize a seminar on cross-cultural sensitivity for UNICAEN staff in regular contact with international students, faculty and researchers.

This work in progress should without a doubt confirm our 2-star rating when independent experts will be commissioned by Campus France in 2020  to assess the self-evaluation of labeled institutions.
